Airbnb is well known for apartments, houses and unique stays, but it is far from the only option for booking accommodation in the UK. Depending on whether you want a countryside cottage, city apartment, luxury home or family-friendly stay, these five alternatives are worth considering.
1. Vrbo is one of the closest alternatives to Airbnb, particularly for entire homes and family holidays. Its UK platform offers holiday rentals ranging from houses and apartments to cabins and larger properties. You can filter by dates, number of guests and facilities such as pet-friendly accommodation. Vrbo can be particularly useful for groups who want a private property rather than a hotel room.
2. Booking.com is another strong option because its accommodation selection goes well beyond traditional hotels. Its UK holiday-rental section includes apartments, houses and other self-catering properties, with extensive filtering for price, facilities, property type and guest ratings. Booking It is especially useful if you want to compare holiday rentals and hotels on the same website, making it convenient for city breaks and longer trips.
3. Plum Guide takes a more curated approach to holiday rentals. The company says its local experts select only the top 3% of homes submitted to its UK collection. Its properties include stylish apartments, cottages and luxury homes across destinations such as London, Cornwall, Devon and the Cotswolds. Plum Guide This makes it worth considering if quality, design and a more premium experience matter more than having the largest possible selection.
4. Snaptrip is particularly focused on UK staycations. It brings together more than 60,000 cottages, lodges and apartments, with live availability, live pricing and instant booking. Snaptrip It is a good option for trips to Cornwall, Devon, Yorkshire, Wales, Scotland and other UK destinations. Snaptrip also has collections for dog-friendly cottages, beach properties, hot tubs, luxury cottages and last-minute breaks.
5. Sykes Cottages is another established UK-focused option, particularly if your priority is a traditional holiday cottage or countryside escape. It is well suited to families, couples and groups looking for self-catering accommodation rather than city apartments.
Which should you use? There is no single choice that suits every traveller. Vrbo is worth exploring for whole-home group stays, Booking.com for broad accommodation comparisons, Plum Guide for curated and design-led properties, Snaptrip for UK staycations, and Sykes Cottages for traditional cottage holidays.
